DescriptionLewis Thomas was born in Wales in 1832. He migrated to Australia in 1859. After working in the gold fields, he came to Ipswich where he worked at the Redbank coal mines. In 1866, he went into partnership with J Thompson in a coal mine in Blackstone, later to become Aberdare Mine. He was widely known as the 'Coal King' and built Brynhyfryd in 1889-1890. He became a Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1893. Thomas was also President of the Blackstone and Ipswich Cambrian Choir. References (online)Ipswich Libraries
